I was raised as an artist by an artist mother. We constantly made crafts around the house and even though it didn’t occur to me to consider myself talented, I tended to get accolades for my creations. After going to art school I stopped making visual art consistently and decided to explore other interests and talents.
Sometimes people tell me that I should make art again and sometimes I tell myself that too. And sometimes I just go ahead and make some. Lately I’ve been writing more; using words and ideas to paint with. I’ve also been coming to marvel at life itself as an art form that includes all the others.
Every life is made up of tiny moments. It’s as if time is a canvas and each life is a particular stroke of the brush. Perhaps we’re not the painter, and maybe not even the brush. But somehow, our choices and cooperation with the life running through us coalesce to determine the vibrancy and impact that stroke has on the painting. Every stroke has it’s role, whether it’s the foundational gesso, the shadows, or the highlights.
I hope for myself and everyone else that we continue to learn to flow and come alive in whatever crazy stroke of the brush we’re living. Every one is an essential part of life’s masterpiece.
